A/Prof Alex Viardot

Associate Professor Alex Viardot is a Consultant Endocrinologist, specialising in hormonal and metabolic health. He is a Staff Specialist in the Department of Endocrinology, joint Deputy Director of the Diabetes Service at St Vincent’s Hospital, and Consultant at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. He is actively involved in research and teaching at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW.

Associate Professor Alex Viardot is a Consultant Endocrinologist in the Department of Endocrinology and joint Deputy Director of the Diabetes Service at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. He is actively involved in teaching at UNSW through the St Vincent’s Clinical School, supervising advanced trainees, junior doctors and medical students.

After completing his specialist training in internal medicine and endocrinology in Switzerland he joined the St Vincent’s Campus and the Garvan Institute in 2004 to pursue a PhD. He was appointed staff specialist in 2012 after returning from London, UK, where he worked as an NHMRC Research Fellow at the Imperial College London.

He is Group Leader at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research with a research focus on fundamental mechanisms of insulin resistance, inflammation and appetite hormones, and ongoing clinical studies in Prader-Willi syndrome. His clinical interests include patient centred and personalised management of diabetes, obesity, thyroid, pituitary disease as well as all other areas of endocrinology.

He is leading the first diabetes outreach clinic for the homeless at Matthew Talbot Hostel and, with a Master of Public Health, has a passion for addressing health inequities and inefficiencies in health care delivery.
